About this Sermon |

Luke 7:1-17

Coming to chapter 7 of Luke’s Gospel, we find Jesus healing a centurion’s servant and bringing a widow’s son back from death. These acts are amazing, and yet we we also have Jesus – God in human flesh – standing utterly amazed. What does God find amazing? And how can we amaze God and be amazed by him?

Gathering Song “Be Still, for the Spirit of the Lord” – Worship Team

Be still, for the Spirit of the Lord, the Holy One is here.
Come, bow before him now, with reverence and with fear.
In him no sin is found, we stand on holy ground.
Be still, for the Spirit of the Lord, the Holy One, is here.

Call to Worship* – Sylvia Mohler

Praise the LORD!
How good it is to sing praises to our God;
For God is gracious,
and a song of praise is fitting.
God heals the brokenhearted,
and binds up their wounds.
Sing to the LORD with thanksgiving;
make melody to our God!

Hymn of Praise – “Jesus! What a Friend for Sinners”

(Verse 1) Jesus! What a Friend for sinners! Jesus! Lover of my soul;
friends may fail me, foes assail me, he, my Savior, makes me whole.

(Refrain) Hallelujah! what a Savior! Hallelujah! what a Friend!
Saving, helping, keeping, loving, he is with me to the end.

(Verse 2) Jesus! what a Strength in weakness! Let me hide myself in him;
Tempted, tried, and sometimes failing
He, my Strength, my victory wins.

(Refrain) Hallelujah! what a Savior! Hallelujah! what a Friend!
Saving, helping, keeping, loving, he is with me to the end.

(Verse 3) Jesus! what a Help in sorrow! While the billows o’er me roll,
Even when my heart is breaking,
He, my Comfort, helps my soul.

(Refrain) Hallelujah! what a Savior! Hallelujah! what a Friend!
Saving, helping, keeping, loving, he is with me to the end.

Pastoral Prayer & The Lord’s Prayer Rev. Hood

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,
 as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Hymn of Discipleship – “O Come to Me, the Master Said”

(Verse 1) O come to me, the Master said, my Father knows your need;
And I shall be, the Master said, your bread of life indeed.
By faith in him we live and grow and share the broken bread,
And all his love and goodness know, for so the Master said.

(Verse 2) Abide in me, the Master said, the true and living vine;
My life shall be, the Master said, poured out for you as wine.
His body to the cross he gave, his blood he freely shed,
Who came in love to seek and save, for so the Master said.

Offering Rev. Hood

Almighty God, giver of every good and perfect gift,
Teach us to give to you all that we have and all that we are,
That we might praise you not with our words only,
But with our whole lives. Amen.
