Worship with us on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. Eastern in-person or online!

About this Sermon |

In Genesis 1, we learn God created out of the “formless and void.” God created out of chaos. How do we respond to the chaos we experience in liminal times? What does God show us in this passage?

About this Series |

The Summer Between: Adventures in Liminality

liminality : a state of transition between one stage and the next.

The Summer of 2020 finds us in the threshold between what was and what is yet to come. In the midst of a global pandemic, we are somewhere between lockdown and vaccine. In terms of civic life, we are somewhere between unrest and revolution.

What do people of faith do in liminal times like these?

Join First Baptist Church this summer for hope and perspective as Pastor Lisa Hood takes us on a journey through the scriptures, discovering how our spiritual ancestors navigated liminal times, and applying biblical truths for the living of these days.

Gathering Song – “Lord, Listen to Your Children Praying”  #489

Lord, listen to your children praying,
Lord, send your Spirit in this place;
Lord, listen to your children praying,
Send us love, send us power, send us grace. (repeat)

Call to Worship – Psalm 8, written by Gord Waldie

Gathered in the name of Jesus Christ,
inspired by the Holy Spirit,
and blessed by God,
we come to worship one, holy God.
O God, our own God,
how wonderful is your name in all the earth.
Your majesty is the music of the starry skies.
yet even children of dust can sing your praises.
In the name of the Healer, the Provider and the Enabler
let your gratitude and joy be made known.
O God, our own God,
how wonderful is your name in all the earth!

Hymn of Adoration “Great is the Lord” #50

(refrain) Great is the Lord, he is holy and just; by his power we trust in his love.
Great is the Lord, he is faithful and true; by his mercy he proves he is love.

  1. Great is the Lord and worthy of glory! Great is the Lord and worthy of praise.
Great is the Lord; now lift up your voice, now lift up your voice:
Great is the Lord! Great is the Lord!
    (refrain)
  2. Great are you, Lord, and worthy of glory! Great are you, Lord, and worthy of praise.
Great are you, Lord; I lift up my voice, I lift up my voice:
Great are you, Lord! Great are you, Lord!

Invitation to Prayer

Pastoral Prayer & The Lord’s Prayer Rev. Hood

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Invitation to the Table

Hymn of Response “This is My Father’s World”  #21

  1. This is my Father’s world, and to my listening ears
All nature sings, and round me rings the music of the spheres.
This is my Father’s world: I rest me in the thought
Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas- his hand the wonders wrought.
  2. This is our Father’s world: O let us not forget
that though the wrong is great and strong, God is the ruler yet.
He trusts us with his world, to keep it clean and fair-
All earth and trees, all skies and seas, all creatures everywhere.
  3. This is my Father’s world: he shines in all that’s fair,
In rustling grass I hear him pass, he speaks to me everywhere.
This is my Father’s world: why should my heart be sad?
The Lord is King, let heaven ring! God reigns; let earth be glad!
