About this Sermon |

Luke 24: 46-53
As we begin reading in Luke 24: 36, the followers of Jesus are feeling skeptical about the rumors they keep hearing about Jesus being risen. What will it take for them to be convinced otherwise?  What will it take for us to be convinced otherwise, too?

Gathering Song – “He is Lord”  #305

He is Lord, He is Lord, He is risen from the dead and He is Lord.
Every knee shall bow, every tongue confess, that Jesus Christ is Lord! (repeat)

Call to Worship“Witnesses” by John van de Laar

How do we find the faith to believe the story of Easter, Jesus?
How do we grasp its truth?
We can only accept it; refusing to reduce it to scientific debate
or historical literalism
kneeling with humility and awe beside the blood-stained cross
and the empty grave;
For then, we are your witnesses.
How do we understand the mystery of your death and life, Jesus?
How do we explain it?
We can only live it;
allowing it to permeate every grain
of this sand that forms us,
every thought, every priority, every act and every interaction,
For then we are your witnesses,
and you deserve nothing less from us.

Hymn of Proclamation“Fairest Lord Jesus” (verses 1, 3, & 4)     #123

  1. Fairest Lord Jesus, ruler of all nature,
O thou of God and man the Son,
Thee will I cherish, thee will I honor,
Thou, my soul’s glory, joy, and crown.
  1. Fair is the sunshine, fairer still the moonlight,
And all the twinkling, starry host:
Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer,
Than all the angels heaven can boast.
  2. Beautiful Savior! Lord of the nations!
Son of God and Son of man!
    Glory and honor, praise, adoration,
    Now and forevermore be thine!

Invitation to Prayer

Pastoral Prayer & The Lord’s Prayer Rev. Hood

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Hymn of Discipleship “’Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus”  #442

  1. ’Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus, just to take him at his word,
Just to rest upon his promise, just to know, “Thus saith the Lord.”
Jesus, Jesus, how I trust them! How I’ve proved him o’er and o’er!
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus! O for grace to trust him more!
  1. I’m so glad I learned to trust you, precious Jesus, Savior, Friend,
And I know that you are with me, will be with me to the end.
Jesus, Jesus, how I trust them! How I’ve proved him o’er and o’er!
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus! O for grace to trust him more!
