About this Sermon |

Mark 16:1-11
In Mark 16, we meet an infamous follower of Jesus named Mary Magdalene. History is filled with different interpretations of who exactly Mary Magdalene was, but who was she, really? Have we gotten her story all wrong? The disciples don’t believe her astonishing news about Jesus being alive. Why not? What would have allowed them to believe? How did Mary Magdalene feel about not being believed? How do we feel? And how can we faithfully respond in those situations?

About this Series |

Who has shaped your faith? Who has nurtured you, baptized you, taught you, transformed you? Who are the figures who have opened your mind to expand your faith? Who are the people who have helped you to feel God’s love in startling ways? Who are the faces of your faith? This summer we’re digging deep into bold and untold stories of those often overlooked in our biblical narratives, hoping these characters remind us that we all play a role in shaping God’s story of redemption and grace.*

Welcome to Worship – Charles Gullion

Hymn of Praise  To God Be the Glory (verses 1 & 3)

(Verse 1) To God be the glory, great things he hath done;
So loved he the world that he gave us his Son,
Who yielded his life an atonement for sin,
And opened the lifegate that all may go in

(Refrain) Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the earth hear his voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father through Jesus the Son,
And give him the glory, great things he hath done.

(Verse 3) Great things he hath taught us, great things he hath done,
And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;
But purer and higher and greater will be
Our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see.

(Refrain) Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the earth hear his voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father through Jesus the Son,
And give him the glory, great things he hath done.

Call to Worship* (inspired by Psalm 118) – Len Wilson

The Lord be with you!
And also with you!
Open to me the gates of righteousness, that I may enter, and give thanks to the Lord.
We will give You thanks, for You have answered us; You have become our salvation.
The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone.
This is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes.
This is the day that the Lord has made;
We will rejoice and be glad in it.

Children’s Sermon – Rev. Lisa Williams Hood

Hymn of Reflection – Into the Garden

(Verse 1) I come to the garden alone, while the dew is still on the roses;
And the voice I hear, falling on my ear, the son of God discloses.
(Refrain) And he walks with me, and he talks with me, and he tells me I am his own,
And the joy we share as we tarry there, none other has ever known.

(Verse 3) I’d stay in the garden with him through the night around me be falling,
But he bids me go; through the voice of woe his voice to me is calling.
(Refrain) And he walks with me, and he talks with me, and he tells me I am his own,
And the joy we share as we tarry there, none other has ever known.
