About this Sermon |

Luke 4:14-30
When we next pick the story of Jesus in Luke 4, we find that there are some similarities between his teaching in the Nazareth synagogue & a presidential inaugural address. Both seek to set the tone for what is around the corner. In Jesus’ case, his teaching not only established the true agenda for the reign of God, it also provided correction to what people assumed that agenda might be. Met first with awe and later with anger that led to violence, Jesus navigates this conversation through the power of the unbounded Holy Spirit. What might that same Spirit empower us to do, and how can we learn from Jesus’ example?

Welcome to Worship – Charles Gullion

Gathering Song “Be Still, for the Spirit of the Lord” – Worship Team

Be still, for the Spirit of the Lord, the Holy One is here.
Come, bow before him now, with reverence and with fear.
In him no sin is found, we stand on holy ground.
Be still, for the Spirit of the Lord, the Holy One, is here.

Call to Worship – (a reading of Psalm 146, Good News Translation) – Charles Gullion

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord, my soul!
I will praise him as long as I live; I will sing to my God all my life.
Don’t put your trust in human leaders; no human being can save you.
When they die, they return to the dust; on that day all their plans come to an end.
Happy are those who have the God of Jacob to help them,
and who depend on the Lord their God,
the Creator of heaven, earth, and sea, and all that is in them.
He always keeps his promises:
He judges in favor of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry.
The Lord sets prisoners free and gives sight to the blind.
He lifts those who have fallen; he loves his righteous people.
He protects the strangers who live in our land;
He helps widows and orphans, but takes the wicked to their ruin.
The Lord is king forever.
Your God, O Zion, will reign for all time.

Hymn of Adoration – “Fairest Lord Jesus”

(Verse 1) Fairest Lord Jesus, ruler of all nature,
O thou of God and man the Son,
Thee will I cherish, thee will I honor,
Thou, my soul’s glory, joy, and crown!
(Verse 3) Fair is the sunshine, fairer still the moonlight,
And all the twinkling, starry host:
Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer,
Than all the angels heaven can boast.
(Verse 4) Beautiful Savior! Lord of the nations!
Son of God and Son of man!
Glory and honor, praise, adoration,
Now and forevermore be thine!

Pastoral Prayer & The Lord’s Prayer Rev. Hood

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

New Testament Reading – Luke 4:14-30 – Rev. Hood

Sermon – An Unbounded Inauguration Day – Rev. Hood

Hymn of Proclamation – “Here I Am, Lord”

(Verse 1) I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard my people cry,
All who dwell in dark and sin my hand will save.
I who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright.
Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send?
(Refrain) Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night.
I will go, Lord, if you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.
(Verse 3) I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame. I will set a feast for them, my hand will save.
Finest bread I will provide till their hearts be satisfied. I will give my life to them. Whom shall I send?
(Refrain) Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night.
I will go, Lord, if you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.

Offering Rev. Hood

Almighty God, giver of every good and perfect gift,
Teach us to give to you all that we have and all that we are,
That we might praise you not with our words only,
But with our whole lives. Amen.
