About this Sermon |

Mark 21:41-44
Jesus is eager to point out to his disciples -and us- a picture of extravagant generosity in the form of an unnamed widow in Mark 12. But what is it that he is calling attention to? The amount of money she gives as an offering? The percentage of her income? Or something else? What might we add to our working definition of generosity as we pay attention to this story?

Exploring Generosity: Snapshots from the Gospel of Mark

Have you ever wondered what the virtue of generosity really looks like?

In 2 Corinthians, Paul encourages Christians to cultivate a spirit of generosity within themselves, but what does that mean? What does it look like? How can we be generous? Can you be generous if you don’t have much money?

And, how does the concept of generosity relate to things like stewardship, offerings, and tithes? Do we have to be generous until it hurts? Will our generosity be returned to us in this life? What are the markers of generosity? What might it look like for me to cultivate generosity within myself? What would it look like if we cultivated generosity amongst our congregation?

Join us as we explore this conversation by looking at a few snapshots of generosity taken by Jesus that we find in the Gospel of Mark.

Prelude – “Now Thank We All Our God” arr. Keveren – Melanie Manges

Welcome to Worship – Len Wilson

Gathering Song “Sanctuary”

Lord, prepare me to be a sanctuary,
Pure and holy, tried and true;
With thanksgiving,
I’ll be a living sanctuary for you. (Repeat)

Call to Worship – (from Psalm 113, written by Rev. Mindi Welton-Mitchell) – Len Wilson

Praise the Lord! Praise, O servants of the Lord,
Praise the name of the Lord!
Blessed be the name of the Lord
From this time on and forevermore.
From the rising of the sun to its setting,
The name of the lord is to be praised.
The Lord is high above all nations,
And God’s glory is above the heavens.
Praise the Lord!

Hymn of Praise – “All Things Bright & Beautiful”

(Refrain) All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful: the Lord God made them all.
(Verse 1) Each little flower that opens,
Each little bird that sings,
God made their glowing colors,
And made their tiny wings.
(Refrain) All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful: the Lord God made them all.
(Verse 3) The cold wind in the winter,
The pleasant summer sun,
The ripe fruits in the garden: God made them everyone.
(Refrain) All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful: the Lord God made them all.
(Verse 4) God gave us eyes to see them,
And lips that we might tell
How great is God Almighty,
Who has made all things well.
(Refrain) All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful: the Lord God made them all.

Pastoral Prayer & The Lord’s Prayer Rev. Hood

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,
 as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Hymn of Thanksgiving – “Now Thank We All Our God”

(Verse 1) Now thank we all our God with heart and hands and voices,
Who wondrous things has done, in whom his world rejoices;
Who, from our mother’s arms, has blessed us on our way
With countless gifts of love, and still is ours today.
(Verse 2) O may this bounteous God through all our life be near us,
With ever joyful hearts and blessed peace to cheer us;
And keep us in his grace and guide us when perplexed,
And free us from all ills in this world and the next.
(Verse 3) All praise and thanks to God the Father now be given,
The Son, and him who reigns with them in highest heaven,
The one eternal God whom earth and heaven adore;
For thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore.

Offering Rev. Hood

Almighty God, giver of every good and perfect gift,
Teach us to give to you all that we have and all that we are,
That we might praise you not with our words only,
But with our whole lives. Amen.
