About this Sermon |

How does Jesus define the idea of generosity? In Mark’s Gospel, we find several narratives where Jesus speaks about the generous gifts of another person. Today, we observe an unnamed woman interrupting a meal in order to generously and extravagantly anoint the head of Jesus with an entire vial of expensive nard (a perfume). What does Jesus have to say to those who criticized her gift? What does this story have to offer to our understanding of what it means to live generously?

Welcome to Worship Charles Gullion

Gathering Song “Sanctuary”

Lord, prepare me to be a sanctuary,
Pure and holy, tried and true;
With thanksgiving,
I’ll be a living sanctuary for you. (Repeat)

Call to Worship – (from Psalm 136: 1, 4-6, 16, 23-24, 26) – Charles Gullion

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good.
His love endures forever.
to him who alone does great wonders,
His love endures forever.
who by his understanding made the heavens,
His love endures forever.
who spread out the earth upon the waters,
His love endures forever.
to him who led his people through the wilderness;
His love endures forever.
He remembered us in our low estate
His love endures forever.
And freed us from our enemies.
His love endures forever.
Give thanks to the God of heaven.
His love endures forever.

Hymn of Praise – “Praise Him! Praise Him!” (verses 1 & 2)

(Verse 1) Praise him! Praise him! Jesus, our blessed Redeemer!
Sing, O earth, his wonderful love proclaim!
Hail him! Hail him! Highest archangels in glory;
Strength and honor give to his holy name!
Like a shepherd Jesus will guard his children
In his arms he carries them all day long:

(Refrain) Praise him! Praise him!
Tell of his excellent greatness.
Praise him, praise him, ever in joyful song!

(Verse 2) Praise him! Praise him! Jesus, our blessed Redeemer!
For our sins he suffered, and bled, and died;
He our rock, our hope of eternal salvation.
Hail him, hail him, Jesus the crucified.
Sound his praises! Jesus who bore our sorrows;
Love unbounded, wonderful, deep, and strong:

(Refrain) Praise him! Praise him!
Tell of his excellent greatness.
Praise him, praise him, ever in joyful song!

Pastoral Prayer & The Lord’s Prayer Rev. Hood

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,
 as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Hymn of Thanksgiving “Great is Thy Faithfulness”

(Verse 1) Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father,
There is no shadow of turning with thee;
Thou changest not, thy compassions they fail not;
As thou has been thou forever wilt be.

(Refrain) Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed thy hand hath provided
Great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

(Verse 2) Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above
Join will all nature in manifold witness
to thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

(Refrain) Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed thy hand hath provided
Great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!
