The Summer Between: Adventures in Liminality
liminality : a state of transition between one stage and the next.
The Summer of 2020 finds us in the threshold between what was and what is yet to come. In the midst of a global pandemic, we are somewhere between lockdown and vaccine. In terms of civic life, we are somewhere between unrest and revolution.
What do people of faith do in liminal times like these?
Join First Baptist Church this summer for hope and perspective as Pastor Lisa Hood takes us on a journey through the scriptures, discovering how our spiritual ancestors navigated liminal times, and applying biblical truths for the living of these days.

Prelude – “Andante in F,” Wely – Melanie Manges
Welcome to Worship – Gordon Coppoc
Gathering Song – “Thy Word” #664
(Refrain) Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
(Verse 1) When I feel afraid, think I’ve lost my way,
Still you’re there right beside me.
And nothing will I fear as long as you are near.
Please be near me to the end.
(Refrain) Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
(Verse 2) I will not forget your love for me,
and yet my heart forever is wandering.
Jesus, be my guide and hold me to your side;
And I will love you to the end.
(Refrain) Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Call to Worship – (inspired byMatthew 11:28-30, by Christine Longhurst) – Gordon Coppoc
Brothers and sisters, boys and girls—
come and worship!
Even if you’re tired and worn out—
come and worship!
Lay down the heavy things you are carrying—
come and worship!
Listen to what Jesus wants to tell you—
come and worship!
See if you can discover how Jesus wants to use you—
come and worship!
For Jesus is humble and gentle,
and he will give us everything we need to follow him.
Hymn of Praise – “Open the Eyes of My Heart”
(Refrain) Open the eyes of my heart, Lord,
Open the eyes of my heart,
I want to see you, I want to see you.
Open the eyes of my heart, Lord,
Open the eyes of my heart,
I want to see you, I want to see you.
(Verse) To see you high and lifted up, shining in the light of your glory;
Pour out your power and love as we sing “Holy, holy, holy.”
(Coda) Holy, holy, holy,
Holy, holy, holy,
Holy, holy, holy,
I want to see you.
