About this Sermon |

The way that Mark 16: 1-8 tells the resurrection often makes readers feel really uncomfortable. If we take the time to really listen to this story, however, perhaps it will cause us to hear the Good News again.

Hymn of Proclamation“Christ Arose”     #294

  1. Low in the grave he lay, Jesus my Savior, waiting the coming day, Jesus my Lord!
    Up from the grave he arose (he arose) with a mighty triumph o’er his foes;
    He arose a victor from the dark domain, and he lives forever with his saints to reign.
    He arose! (He arose!) He arose! (He arose!) Hallelujah! Christ arose!
  2. Vainly they watch his bed, Jesus my Savior, vainly they seal the dead, Jesus my Lord!
    Up from the grave he arose (he arose) with a mighty triumph o’er his foes;
    He arose a victor from the dark domain, and he lives forever with his saints to reign.
    He arose! (He arose!) He arose! (He arose!) Hallelujah! Christ arose!
  3. Death cannot keep his prey, Jesus my Savior, he tore the bars away, Jesus my Lord!
    Up from the grave he arose (he arose) with a mighty triumph o’er his foes;
    He arose a victor from the dark domain, and he lives forever with his saints to reign.
    He arose! (He arose!) He arose! (He arose!) Hallelujah! Christ arose!

Invitation to Prayer

Pastoral Prayer & The Lord’s Prayer Rev. Hood

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name,

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,

 as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

New Testament Reading   Mark 16: 1-8 (NRSV)

1When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. They had been saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.” So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.”

Sermon “The Uncomfortably Good News” – Rev. Hood

Hymn of Hope“In the Garden”  #300

  1. I come to the garden alone, while the dew is still on the roses;
    And the voice I hear, falling on my ear, the Son of God discloses.
    (Chorus) And he walks with me, and he talks with me, and he tells me I am His own,
    And the joy we share as we tarry there, none other has ever known.
  2. He speaks, and the sound of his voice is so sweet the birds hush their singing,
    And the melody that he gave to me with in my heart is ringing.
    (Chorus) And he walks with me, and he talks with me, and he tells me I am His own,
    And the joy we share as we tarry there, none other has ever known.

Postlude“In the Garden”  #300

  1. I’d stay in the garden with him through the night around me be falling,

but he bids me go; through the voice of woe his voice to me is calling.

(Chorus) And he walks with me, and he talks with me, and he tells me I am His own,

And the joy we share as we tarry there, none other has ever known.
